40 Years of Service
Did you know Westminster’s roots can be traced all the way back to meetings in a feed store room on East Washington Street in the late 1800’s? The church began as a Sabbath school mission and was humorously referred to as “The Hay Seed Mission."
The first church building was erected on East Washington Street in February 1888, and the congregation moved to 445 State Ave in 1916. WNS utilized this building to provide services for our neighbors up to 2019.
In the years after WWII, the Near Eastside began to change rapidly. Serving youth in the community had always been a focus of Westminster’s ministry, and the first vacation bible school was launched in the summer 1982. This grew to a full summer program in 1983, and a Board of Directors was formed in 1984.
As our community has continued to change over the last four decades, serving youth in our community has remained a focus of Westminster Neighborhood Services. Thanks to amazing supporters, donors, and volunteers, Westminster has been able to grow and change with the community we serve. Each year we put food on the tables of thousands of neighbors. We share the hope and joy of Christmas with hundreds of families each year. Many students continue Westminster to be a second home and a safe space to come to during the summer and after school. We collaborate with many other organizations to meet neighbors where they need us most.
Westminster has made a lasting impact on the lives of thousands of neighbors in need over the course of 40 years thanks to people like you!
