Celebrating Black History Month
Our Westminster Afterschool Program kiddos have been learning about courageous leaders and difference makers like Rosa Parks and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
We sat down with some of our students to talk about Black History Month, why it is important, and what it means to them. Here is what some of them had to say:
"Black History Month is important because people like Rosa Parks and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. were brave and helped make a difference."
"It just makes me feel happy.... Black History Month makes me happy and proud."
"Black History Month is about celebrating our culture and all of the great things we do and have done in the world."
As we serve our neighbors through the food pantry, soup kitchen, youth program, and various other services they often become much more than neighbors. Executive Director Chrissy Petersen says, "We form a bond with our neighbors. They aren't just people we serve, they are our friends."
Not Just Neighbors
Our Case Manager, Takeisha Parrish shares a story on how she got to know one of our neighbors as she kept him company while he waited on a ride to bring his groceries home:
"During this time he provided me with a recap of 'kids these days', how he retired from Ford Motors after 40 years of employment, and he stated he would be 84 years young in 2 weeks. He later returned on his birthday, I wished him a happy birthday, and I ran and scoured the refrigerator to find him a birthday dessert. He was surprised I remembered... he thanked me for the cake, talked about his family coming to visit, and he slowly wheeled his groceries home."
