Eight-year old Victoria Craig would act out in class and talk back to the teacher. Her sister, Traniece Norman, 6, wouldn't sit in her seat, talked too much in class and didn't listen to the teacher.
Their misbehaving at school got them into trouble.
And their brother Jacque Craig, 10, who is autistic, doesn't communicate with anyone at school.
It was obvious to Francis Craig that his kids needed help to get on track at Indianapolis Public School No. 14. It wasn't that they were bad kids. They just needed more direction. More focus. More guidance. And more help with their schoolwork than their parents could provide.
But as Craig was walking to the bus stop in his Near-Eastside neighborhood one afternoon more than a year ago, he noticed a sign for Westminster Neighborhood Ministries' after-school tutoring program.
And that was just the beginning.
How did Westminster help the Craig kids turn their lives around? Find out here.
Westminster Neighborhood Ministries reaches out to serve the families and children in the growing inner-city area of Indianapolis’s Near Eastside. Thirty percent of the families in WNM's neighborhood live at or below the poverty line. For these families, poverty, stress, illiteracy, joblessness, and hunger are often daily struggles.
